The drawstring running through the hood of a favourite hoodie or jumper is one of the first details to wear out, particularly if it is pulled and adjusted often. A frayed end eventually snaps, or the cord slips entirely out of the casing during a wash, leaving the hood without any way to be tightened.
Rather than setting the garment aside because of this one missing detail, fitting a replacement drawstring is a straightforward task that takes only a few minutes. A length of similar cord or ribbon, along with a small safety pin, is generally all that is needed to complete the job.
Threading a new drawstring through
Attaching a small safety pin to one end of the new cord makes it far easier to guide through the narrow casing around the hood. The pin acts as a firm point to push and manoeuvre along the channel, rather than trying to feed the soft cord through on its own.
Working the pin slowly and steadily around the casing, easing out any bunching of fabric as it goes, helps prevent the cord from getting stuck partway through. Pausing occasionally to smooth the casing flat makes the whole process considerably quicker and less frustrating.
Once the cord has been threaded all the way through and out the other side, securing each end with a simple knot stops it from slipping back into the casing during future use. Trimming any excess length afterwards gives the finished hood a neat, tidy appearance.
With a new drawstring in place, a favourite hoodie is fully functional again within minutes, rather than being set aside for a small, easily fixed detail. This simple repair extends the life of a well-loved garment considerably, for the cost of only a short length of cord.
